I had a lovely email through last week to tell me all about a new book that’s been released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the great British brand, Browns.
They very kindly offered to send me a copy of Forty years in the making to giveaway to one of you lovely lot. It’s just arrived safely at the geekery HQ and I’ve settled with a cup of tea to take a look through it.
The book takes you back to the founding of Brown’s all the way back in 1973, walking you through a timeline of recipes served in their famous brasserie. Alongside each era’s recipes, the scene is set with anecdotes covering fashion, music and pop culture happenings. There’s also a good helping of Brown’s famous cocktail recipes throughout the book and some background to each of them.
I absolutely love the concept of the book, there are few restaurants with this much history behind them. I imagine for those old enough to remember 1970s, it’s a real nostalgic meander down memory lane, yet as a relatively ‘young un’ I have still enjoyed it.
I find it fascinating to see how our food habits have changed. The recipes that seemed the height of dinner party sophistication back in the 70s, like a prawn cocktail, are now pretty basic. There are loads of recipes that could slip in to the ‘retro cool’ label. Lobster thermidor anyone? I’m not sure I’ve ever known a dish so over made as it was back then, but still it’s a classic.
If you fancy a chance to win a copy, you can enter using the rafflecopter widget below.
