Judging by my time on Pinterest, the washi tape craze isn’t slowing down. People are putting it on candles, jars, vases, fireplaces, walls, keys, furniture, everything. I think I’ve caught the bug.
My favourite way of using washi is for gift wrap. I just wrap my gift in brown parcel paper then go crazy with tape. It works out much more affordable than buying different gift wrap for every occasion, you just have to learn a few tricks to customise it.
Now, don’t panic. I’m not about to show you wrapped up Christmas gifts – I’m not that organised! I figured I’d dress up some gift tags to hopefully give you a few little ideas of how to decorate with washi, without wasting reams of paper.
The gift tags I’m using are seriously cheap – Paperstone sell them for less than a penny each! Pair that with a roll or two of Scotch Washi tape and parcel paper you can get creative on plenty of gifts on a budget. It’s always nice to receive something that’s taken a bit of effort too.
If you haven’t tried Washi and are wondering what makes it so handy, it’s repositionable so it won’t spoil a surface when you change your mind and take it off. That’s particularly useful if you’re clumsy like me. The other thing that sets it apart from cellotape is that can also write on it with pen or pencil. I don’t think cellotape comes in such nice colours either!
Last Christmas I wrapped my gifts with parcel paper topped with homemade bows, this year I’m weighing up washi tape in festive colours, polka dot designs with avery labels or something involving chalkboard paint. Yeah, I probably think about things like this too much. Whatever I decide I’ll be doing the brown paper thing again this Christmas. What will you be doing?
P.S I must say, my three tag designs are pretty lacklustre compared to some of the creations I’ve seen. If you’re looking for some inspiration, I suggest heading to my Pinterest board full of ways to DIY gift wrap.
