As you’ll all know by now, the Lavazza challenge I’m taking part in is all about new traditions. After sharing my favourite twist on a classic recipe last week – my Espresso & Pecan Pie - it was my turn to ask you guys what your new tradition was. I wanted to know your most unusual food combinations. Do you put something unexpected in a traditional dish? Are there baked beans hiding where you least expect?
I kickstarted the conversation on Twitter & Facebook and you guys really didn’t hold anything back. I feel like I’ve peeked in on your weakest moment. Some of the suggestions I found a little strange, but you’ll probably think the same of mine. I thought it would only be fair for me to confess first, so here we go:
We have a jar of marmite in our house, but it’s never spread on toast or used in sandwiches. Matt and I both like to add a big spoonful to chilli, bolognese and stews. You’d never really know there was marmite in there, but it adds a rich, savoury flavour and gives the sauce a darker, glossier look. That’s our #newtradition, nothing too strange there I don’t think – although you may disagree.
You guys came up with some crackers. Things I’ve never thought of. Some that I would try, some that I’d avoid like the plague. How many have you tried?
